A Legacy of Charity holds kick-off dinner May 21st

Salt Lake City, Utah—May 18, 2010—A newly organized public charity, The Glen L. Rudd Foundation, will introduce its guiding purposes and begin its fundraising efforts at a kick-off dinner to be held Friday, May 21, in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Elder Rudd, now 92 and a former General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is best remembered for helping to build the Welfare Program of the Church under the direction of President Harold B. Lee.

Vice President & Treasurer, David Rudd explained, “We are organizing fundraising groups centered around different areas of service in our father’s life. For example, we are bringing together people he has influenced and worked with through the Church Welfare Department; his service as a General Authority; his presidencies of the Florida, New Zealand and Corpus Christi, Texas missions; the New Zealand Mission Society and others. We are also raising funds for a Glen L. Rudd scholarship that will give financial help to Polynesian youth who qualify to attend BYU-Hawaii. Because of Dad’s strong belief in the value of education, this year we will also partner with Valley Crest Elementary School in West Valley City, Utah, to provide school supplies and teaching tools.”

“We feel inspired, even compelled, to help our family and others keep our father’s spirit of service and charity alive. We are making a concentrated effort to involve his grandchildren and great grandchildren and encourage their contributions, no matter how small.” said Foundation President, Charles Rudd. We’ve defined three main purposes of the Foundation, which will drive our fundraising activities and service opportunities: 1) Preserve his legacy, 2) Provide service and 3) Promote charity.”

Elder Rudd has been somewhat resistant to public recognition, but he is lending his full support to the efforts of his family. “I have a vision for the work. The importance of education in any area of the world is paramount to the opportunities that people have. A small amount of resources or effort can make a huge impact. I’m not anything special. I’m just one person,” Elder Rudd said, “but I can do my best. When I join together with those I know, we can do great things. I invite my descendants and all those who seek and love the opportunity to do good to respond to the awaiting adventure this Foundation will provide.”
